The "Model" field in the admin panel is optional in OpenCart.

The optional "Model" module in the admin panel solves one of the most common problems in the OpenCart admin panel: the "Model" field is no longer required when creating or editing a product. This is convenient when quickly adding products, working with dropshipping, importing items without a SKU, or simply not using "model" in your accounting model.

Purpose of the module

By default, OpenCart requires the "Model" field to be filled in (at least 1 character). This module removes this restriction in the admin panel: now the "Model" field can be left blank, while maintaining the maximum length limit to ensure data integrity.

Important: This module only changes the validation in the admin panel. It doesn't force you to remove the "model" from templates, exports, or integrations—it simply gives you the freedom to leave the field blank when it's not needed.

What exactly does the module do?

• Removes the minimum length requirement for the model field when saving a product in the admin panel.
• Maintains maximum length check: the "Model" value must not exceed 64 characters.
• Gently modifies standard OpenCart files using OCMOD operations, without manually editing the core.

Recommendations and application examples

The module is especially useful if your product management logic is not tied to the "Model":

• you use SKU/Article number or internal identifier instead of model;
• You keep records in CRM/1C, and OpenCart is just a showcase;
• Some of the products are temporary (test items, drafts), and you don’t want to fill in unnecessary information.

Example: You're adding a new product, "White T-shirt," and you don't know the model/supplier part number. Previously, you had to enter a random value to save the card. With the module, you simply leave the "Model" field blank and continue working.

If the "Model" field is displayed somewhere on the site or in integrations, think about the behavior for empty values in advance: hide the block, display "—", or use an alternative field (SKU).
